The Bride & Groom: Vicky and John
The Location: West Greece
The Feeling: Romantic and free
Destination Wedding in Greece: Saying ‘I do’ in Preveza, Greece.
A romantic beach setting for an intimate and luxurious wedding was the order of the day for Vicky and John. We worked with this happy couple from the USA to put together a beautiful coastal wedding day with an azure ocean view.
We love finding out the love stories behind each couple we work with as this helps us to incorporate as much of each couple into the wedding. They met through mutual friends and had been together for four years. They had an open minded and adventurous approach to their wedding planning and were a delight to work with. Despite not knowing exactly what they wanted – they knew they wanted to get married on the sand, and have a destination Greek wedding that would feel truly special.
A Wedding With A View
As soon as they got engaged Vicky knew that the wedding had to take place on the picturesque West coast of Greece. With Greek grandparents, Vicky had visited Greece many times and John had fallen in love with the country too. Together they envisioned marrying there so they got in touch with Make Happy Memories so that organising their destination dream wedding would be a lot easier.
The location of a wedding is often the most important thing to get right and Vicky and John knew that they wanted an authentic and private beach wedding that wouldn’t feel intruded upon by tourists. Additionally, they needed somewhere that could be easily found – not too far from the airport and accessible for elderly grandparents.
Immediately they ruled out a lot of the more popular, touristy Greek islands and together we ended up deciding that the west coast of the Greek mainland, near the region of Preveza, would be an ideal place for their wedding. With unspoilt views of the Ionian sea, the majestic landscape provided the perfect inspiration for a luxurious and elegant wedding design.
An Elegant Feeling
Vicky and John weren’t completely sure what they wanted in terms of decoration and theme. What we discussed was the feeling they wanted to create – a sense of relaxed elegance and romance with traditional touches as a nod to Vicky’s Greek heritage.
Working with a couple who was undecided about elements of their wedding allowed us to come up with some creative ideas to delight and surprise them, and Vicky and John were extremely happy with the results.
From mixing styles of vases on the tables to decadent floral displays and traditional Greek sugared almonds and wax candles as favours, there was a sense of finesse and understated elegance about the whole day.
The peony is such a beautiful flower and the various shades of pink were perfect for use in this romantic themed wedding. We created two arches made of peonies and other assorted flowers, finished with creamy drapery for a truly Greek visual. Vicky and John were married beneath one of these beautiful floral arches (an orthodox ceremony had already taken place in the USA). While they said their vows, the peonies provided an ethereal frame around them that looked stunning in their photos about afterwards!
The second arch was created for Vicky and John to cut their cake underneath. This was hijacked by the wedding party later on as the perfect place for lots of selfies, wedding pics and photo booth style photography – a lovely unplanned touch that everyone was talking.
Details To Delight
Invitations and Stationary
We used sandy tones for envelopes for the table favours and wedding invitations to echo the beach theme. Inside, the envelopes were lined with pink and green floral designs to tie into the colour theme of the day. Envelopes were finished with hand tied twine and individual roundels for each guest.
Favours
The wedding favours added to the charm and design of the table decoration – each guest received a wrapped wax candle scented with Hyacinth and Jasmine, and a box of sugared almonds – a traditional Greek choice of favour that reverberated with Vicky’s Greek roots.
Flowers
Pale pink carnations and creamy wide-faced Austin roses topped the main centre pieces that were set in rectangular glass vases. Other assorted vases contained single flowers or foliage or a blend of flowers. From eucalyptus foliage to budding white roses.
Table decorations
Traditional but classic, we used high quality white wax candles on white mounts. The candles were three different heights to add interest and structure to the table. With a feminine pink table runner that was picked out in the ribbons on each individual place, the overall effect was soft and romantic and the perfect colour to synchronise with the dramatic pink hue that the sky turned, just before dusk.
Mr & Mrs Highlights:
Vicky and John were delighted that everyone had so much fun. With the beautiful floral canopy doubling up as a spontaneous photo booth for guests to take pictures against, they have some wonderful photos and memories from a magical day.
Guest Highlights:
Being able to dine on the beach with the sand under their shoes, while hearing the sea crash gently on the shore, and the live band playing the saxophone against a rose hued sunset. Because the wedding location was set amid mountains and sea, the wedding guests enjoyed making the most of their time in Greece afterwards, with rafting, walking and horse riding.
Our Highlights:
Enabling this very in-love couple to have the wedding of their dreams, providing a luxurious set up set amid a glorious landscape was a true delight. With a rock band playing late into the night and everyone dancing and smiling, it was certainly a wedding that made happy memories – and so for us at Make Happy Memories, it was a job well done.
